Summary

Maren Yearly doesn’t just break hearts, she devours them。

Since she was a baby, Maren has had what you might call "an issue" with affection。 Anytime someone cares for her too much, she can’t seem to stop herself from eating them。 Abandoned by her mother at the age of 16, Maren goes looking for the father she has never known, but finds more than she bargained for along the way。

Faced with love, fellow eaters, and enemies for the first time in her life, Maren realizes she isn’t just looking for her father, she is looking for herself。 The real question is, will she like the girl she finds?

this usually isn’t the case but the movie adaptation was 10x better than the book

I just 。。。 did not get it? There was a lot of build up, nice writing style, but in the end it made ask myself what was the purpose of this book, as it was not atmospheric enough to be just about the atmosphere and there was not much else。。。

I was sucked in by the first half page。 Twisted, eerie, delicious read! The end got a little slow for me, but the last two chapters made up for it。 I'm upset that it ended the way it did though。 I was sucked in by the first half page。 Twisted, eerie, delicious read! I really didn't know how I was going to react to this book - cannibals in love was a bit of a challenging concept for me。 But it gripped me for the first 75 percent of the story。Then it rambled on well past the seemingly final resolution, and I started to wonder what the whole point of the journey was。 I was also enjoying other readers' theories about what cannibalism symbolized in the book, which were super interesting。 Then I read the author's note and it ruined all of that for me with a very I really didn't know how I was going to react to this book - cannibals in love was a bit of a challenging concept for me。 But it gripped me for the first 75 percent of the story。Then it rambled on well past the seemingly final resolution, and I started to wonder what the whole point of the journey was。 I was also enjoying other readers' theories about what cannibalism symbolized in the book, which were super interesting。 Then I read the author's note and it ruined all of that for me with a very straightforward explanation of her point。 The jury's still out on whether or not I could stomach the movie adaptation, regardless if it is starring Timothee Chalamet。 。。。more

Honestly was more enthralling than I expected。 Wasn’t much of a substantial plot twist but still a good read。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 started this really really loving it (i adored the movie) but the last third was lost on me。 all the conflict that happened was very rush with little build-up。 despite cannibalism being a metaphor for desire, lee’s death in the book is glossed over in a way that was really frustrating — the way it’s done in the film held a lot more impact to me imo。 maren’s actions and literally Man’s intentions were v skewed and made little sense to me in terms of plot development。 it’s very weird how much mare started this really really loving it (i adored the movie) but the last third was lost on me。 all the conflict that happened was very rush with little build-up。 despite cannibalism being a metaphor for desire, lee’s death in the book is glossed over in a way that was really frustrating — the way it’s done in the film held a lot more impact to me imo。 maren’s actions and literally Man’s intentions were v skewed and made little sense to me in terms of plot development。 it’s very weird how much maren cares about lee and then when they actually have physical intimacy the act of her eating him is like? a paragraph or two? like also girl。 he JUST saved you。 even that death couldve been more expressive through text。 boooo tomato tomato 。。。more

Honestly there were just so many plot holes and too many coincidences for my liking。 However it was nearly impossible to put down at the same time。

i’m gonna be completely honest, i read this book while i was on a cruise ship and i passed out from motion sickness a couple of times, so i was really in a daze。 i loved this book tho, it deserves a reread because i was definitely confused on some parts but maybe that’s just because i was so out of it。 the writing was super strong and maren’s character has some of the best development i’ve ever seen。 there were many moments where i audibly gasped because there were so many twists and turns。 this i’m gonna be completely honest, i read this book while i was on a cruise ship and i passed out from motion sickness a couple of times, so i was really in a daze。 i loved this book tho, it deserves a reread because i was definitely confused on some parts but maybe that’s just because i was so out of it。 the writing was super strong and maren’s character has some of the best development i’ve ever seen。 there were many moments where i audibly gasped because there were so many twists and turns。 this book gets a 3。7 that will be rounded to a 4, about to watch the movie right now! 。。。more

Didn’t quite hit as hard as the movie, but I raced through it and had a good time regardless。 Interesting characters, a fun spattering of horror elements and an enjoyable coming-of-age story。

2。5 Fun fast read but painstakingly mid。 Protag basically sulks the whole book about her problems with eating people when it's literally a conscious choice? Idk I just don't feel bad for Maren it's hard to root for her bc she feels so bad for herself yet does nothing to actually stop eating others。 Get up girl!!! Ending twist whatever was also so anticlimactic overall disappointed writing wasnt amazing either thought it was gonna be more 2。5 Fun fast read but painstakingly mid。 Protag basically sulks the whole book about her problems with eating people when it's literally a conscious choice? Why I chose this book: I saw the movie trailer, and I wanted to watch the film but wasn't sure I could handle the gore and cannibalism in film format。 I couldn't stop thinking about it though, so when I found out it was a book, I bought it!Brief summary: Maren has always had a hunger that caused her shame and scared her mother。 She's an eater, which means she eats people。 Whenever Maren consumed someone to satisfy her needs, her mother immediately packs them up and moves to avoid consequences。 H Why I chose this book: I saw the movie trailer, and I wanted to watch the film but wasn't sure I could handle the gore and cannibalism in film format。 I couldn't stop thinking about it though, so when I found out it was a book, I bought it!Brief summary: Maren has always had a hunger that caused her shame and scared her mother。 She's an eater, which means she eats people。 Whenever Maren consumed someone to satisfy her needs, her mother immediately packs them up and moves to avoid consequences。 Her mother keeps protecting Maren until she turns 16, at which point she leaves Maren to fend for herself。 With nothing but some money and information about her estranged father, Maren must learn to take care of herself。 When she finds a boy, Lee, who has her same hunger, the two bond as misfits and help each other out。What I didn't like about this book: While I really enjoyed this book, it did bother me that Maren was not more of an assertive, action-taking character。 When she meets Lee, she delegates the responsibilities of daily living to him and mostly follows his lead。 I wanted to see Maren take charge more。 I also felt lost by the scenario with the older eater, Sully, who she meets along the way。 Sully's motives were not clear to me。What I like about this book: While it bothered me that Maren was not more assertive, I also really liked that the author played around with the theme of shame。 Whether the author intended this or not, I saw Maren's shame for eating people as a direct parallel to the shame young women face for their adolescent bodies and femaleness。 While Maren was bothered by her consuming habits, Lee and Sully largely see their habit as a means to get by in the world。 Lee experiences some guilt, but he manages it by only eating people he codes as "bad," while Maren only consumes people who are nice to her。 I also noticed that when Maren consumes someone, the author never provides the gruesome details (thankfully for me, I didn't want those details anyway)。 There is only one scene where the consumption is described, and it is after Sully eats。 I am fascinated by the cannibalism as a metaphor for female sexuality and the societal pressures for women to be pure。 I am not a rereader, but I have plans to reread this book and consider this metaphor on a deeper level as I think it adds a lot of depth to this weird ittle book。 。。。more

This was a quick and fascinating read about a teen cannibal written by a vegan author。I felt the book fell short of it’s potential by the end, but I don’t regret reading it。

I listened to this book on Audible。 The narration was awesome! The story itself had a few weak moments。 It felt like there was a whole section in the middle where she knew the story needed to be longer but struggled with what to write。 Also, there were moments when the reader is expected to fill in the gaps but the details are too vague to get a good grasp on what we were expected to just understand was intended。 Overall, I still enjoyed the book

Actually preferred the movie
